Five Basic Unity Principles
1. There is only one Presence and one Power active as the universe and as my life, God the Good. 2. Our essence is of God; therefore, we are inherently good. This God essence was fully expressed in Jesus, the Christ. 3. We are co-creators with God, creating reality through thoughts held in mind. 4. Through prayer and meditation, we align our heart-mind with God. Denials and affirmations are tools we use. 5. Through thoughts, words and actions, we live the Truth we know. |
Myrtle and Charles Fillmore, Founders of Unity
|
The Unity movement was founded by Charles Fillmore (1854–1948) and Myrtle Fillmore (1845–1931) in Kansas City, Missouri in 1889 after Mrs. Fillmore had been cured of her tuberculosis, she believed, by spiritual healing. As a result, the Fillmores studied spiritual healing and shared their insights through magazines, books and pamphlets. In 1890, the Fillmores developed a prayer ministry called Silent Unity,an international prayer ministry that offers people help through prayer and counseling and publishes the Daily Word.
Influenced by Emma Curtis Hopkins and Mary Baker Eddy (the founder of Christian Science), Myrtle and Charles Fillmore began the Unity School of Christianity, a new thought and metaphysics school that develops ministers and other leaders who live spiritual principles and inspire transformation. The growth of the movement and school led to several moves within Kansas City, and eventually, after World War I, to the development of Unity Village, 15 miles from Kansas City.
Today, Unity’s headquarters at Unity Village, Missouri, provides a tranquil atmosphere for quiet meditation and a place for all people, regardless of faith or nationality, to worship. The prayer, publishing, education and retreat ministries provide people around the world with positive, spiritual messages of hope, healing, prosperity and peace.
